About Jean-Laurent Mallet
Professor Jean-Laurent Mallet's scientific career started in 1968 where he
got a MS degree from the
Ecole Nationale Superieure de Geologie (Nancy-France).
He diversified his interests into mathematics, finishing his research
education with a PhD in applied mathematics at the
(“Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine”. ).
In his early years, he worked with the French research institute CNRS
in the field of numerical data analysis and automated mapping. In 1981, he was
nominated Professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie, from which
he directed teaching and research in mathematics and computer sciences applied
to geology.
In 1989 he launched the gOcad research project, supported by a
consortium
of more than 25 oil&gas companies and 100 universities and public research
institutions around the world.
In 1997 with a group of his old students, Pr Mallet created the
Earth-Decision-Science Company which merged with
Paradigm-Geophysical in 2006.
In 2006, professor Mallet retired from the university but not from research:
- In 2006 he was nominated “Emeritus professor” by the (Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine and “Research Fellow” By Paradigm-Geophysical.
- In 2007 he served as “Distinguished Lecturer” for the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists )
- In 2008 and 2009 he served as “Distinguished Lecturer” for the EAGE
- He his currently dedicating his research efforts to the development and applications of a brand new unified mathematical model of the subsurface based on a “time/space curvilinear coordinate system” that he calls “GeoChron”. This mathematical model is the heart of the new generation of geomodeling software (SKUA) developed by Paradigm.
Pr Mallet is a member of EAGE, SPE, IAMG and SEG. He received several awards during the last decade:
- In 1997 he was awarded the Italgas prize “Italgaz by Italian scientific authorities,
- In 2000 he was awarded the SPE Anthony Lucas Gold Medal
- In 2003 he was awarded the “Grand Prix Dolomieux” by the French Academy of Sciences
- In 2003, he was awarded the grade of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Freiberg in Germany.
- In 2005 he was awarded the “Marcel Roubault Prize” by the Société Géologique de France.
- At the upcoming SEG 2009 to be held in Houston in the fall, he will receive the “SEG Distinguished Achievement Award” for the gOcad research project.
