Several steps of geomechanically-based structural restoration of a synsedimentary fault (Model Courtesy of Harvard University). The top of each layer is restored sequentially, and deformation is propagated at depth using geomechanical finite element code. This procedure can be useful to check the consistency of a structural model with a geodynamical scenario and geomechanical rules, to assess deformation through time, and to connect to basin modeling codes including also the thermal and fluid migration aspects.
